Black Pepper Tofu

Black Pepper Tofu

This vegan dish is full of flavor and perfect for a quick and easy dinner. The crispy tofu and the spicy black pepper sauce make for a delicious combination. Serve over rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Ingredients:

  • 14 oz / 400 g extra-firm tofu
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 inch ginger, minced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 12 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup / 60 ml veg stock

Instructions:

  1. Put tofu into a press for up to 20 minutes, or wrap with paper towels with a weight on-top to remove moisture.
  2. Slice vegetables.
  3. Once moisture removed from tofu, slice into cubes and place into a large mixing bowl.
  4. Season tofu with onion powder and garlic powder.
  5. Add cornstarch and toss tofu to combine equally.
  6. Add sesame oil to a saucepan over medium heat.
  7. Add tofu pieces and fry each side until crispy.
  8. Add sesame oil to a wok (or use the same saucepan) over medium heat.
  9. Add onions, garlic, ginger and peppers to pan and fry until soft.
  10. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, black pepper, veg stock and mix together.
  11. Add crispy fried tofu pieces and mix together in sauce.
  12. Sprinkle with chopped green onions and serve over rice or noodles.
